Hi-Sky Enterprises
Chetwynd, British Columbia

Hi-Sky Enterprises, a northeastern British Columbia logging company, has seen considerable changes since started by Lorne Waldie in 1980. His son Shayne joined the company in 1991 and is now Operations Manager. “When I started, we used all hand-fallers, line-skinners and hand-buckers – everything was power-saw work,” Shayne Waldie recalled. “Today, we have no power saws in the bush, in fact it’s all mechanical and little-to-no manual labour. At Hi-Sky, we’ve adapted well to the changes, and we’re continuing to look at new processes to further improve our productivity and profitability.”

“Komatsu has always built a great product,” said Waldie. “They got their feller bunchers from Valmet, which got them from Timbco. It’s a good line. Lots of power. Good balance. Excellent reliability. One of the best things about our Komatsu feller bunchers is that they’re compact, so they’re much easier to maneuver when we’re out amongst the trees and stumps."

– Shayne Waldie, Operations Manager

United Paving
Swift Current, Saskatchewan

In 2004, Ben Wilkinson, a farmer from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, decided he wanted a change of scenery and change of career, so he bought into an asphalt paving firm in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. United Paving does highway maintenance, but its specialty is working for small towns. In order to deliver quality projects, United Paving recently turned to Vögele pavers and a Hamm roller from SMS Equipment. Ben Wilkinson is pleased with the performance of the Vögele pavers and Hamm roller, which he acquired largely because of the support he received from SMS on a Wirtgen mill.

“The parts and service support we get from SMS is tremendous. It’s nice to be with a dealer we know is going to be there for us.”

- Ben Wilkinson, Owner

Taurus Projects Group Inc.
Edmonton, Alberta

Diversification and a clean reputation give this Alberta-based company an advantage. The company performs facilities installations, moves and maintenance; material handling; parking lot construction and maintenance, including snow removal, sanding and dust control; and has a supply of electricians, gas and pipe fitters, carpenters and other tradesmen.

“Our first purchase with SMS was a Komatsu PC308 excavator,” recalled Loranger. “Then we bought three WA380-7 wheel loaders, and it’s continued from there. Komatsu machines are perfect for what we do. They are reliable and have excellent power and maneuverability.”

– Fab Loranger, Owner

Taseko’s Gibraltar Mine
South-central British Columbia

Taseko’s Gibraltar Mine is the second-largest open-pit copper mine in Canada and the fourth-largest in North America.

“SMS has provided terrific support every step of the way, including modifications that meet our specifications, and operator and technician training,” said Rouleau. “They showed us how to best utilize our resources so we’re getting the most production and efficiency out of our equipment. SMS has technicians dedicated to the mine, and we continue to hold monthly meetings to talk about anything that needs to be addressed. Part of any equipment-buying decision is factoring in the relationship with the dealer, and we’ve built one with SMS Equipment that we believe is very solid, and we’re very happy with it.”

– Dave Rouleau, Taseko VP of Operations
